Dear Parish Family,
As I was working on this bulletin I came across some vintage post card pictures of July 4th. There seems to have been a time when we all truly respected the flag, appreciated our freedom, and cherished the independence proclaimed for us in 1776. The years past were not always prosperous for all and entailed a great deal of struggle. After all, this country has seen it’s share of war and bloodshed, the Great Depression, unrest of the Viet-Nam years, 9/11 and, quite honestly, we could go on and on. But here we come to the 4th in 2021 and there are still difficult years for what is a rather young Nation. It must be so difficult for our Veterans to see the flag of our Nation ignored, tread upon and disregarded. You have a right to do so but you have a duty, a responsibility to those who have fought for Freedom since the days of Independence Hall to cherish the flag and the ideals that is represents. Respect seems to be missing in our country today! SO in the midst of your picnic and fire-works, your bar-b-q and gatherings take a moment to be grateful for that fragile delicate gift of America. There are still citizens who love the USA and revere her ideals. There are men and women standing guard over our Nation realizing always the risk and the possible peril. There are still children who Pledge Allegiance and fly their hand-held flags. Let’s Celebrate our Nation—let’s celebrate those 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence who ‘mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.’
Perhaps there is the key to it all: within the fabric of the red, white, and blue is a sacred honor which we are called upon to regard!
May your week be blessed.
